Space, Other Tech Shape Geopolitical Future: Minister Shekhawat
Ahmedabad, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated that the integration of fields such as space technology, AI, quantum technologies, robotics, semiconductors, and high-performance computing will shape a country's geopolitical standing.
Addressing the 3rd National Space Day, the Union culture and tourism minister stated that private involvement in the space industry does not lessen the significance of organizations such as ISRO.

Shekhawat argued at the event, hosted by the Space Applications Centre (SAC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the Department of Science, that privatisation of space represents the "democratisation of space opportunities."
Today marks the era of space technology, artificial intelligence, quantum tech, robotics, humanoids, advanced materials, semiconductors, and high-performance computing, he noted, emphasizing that life will undoubtedly change in the years ahead.
The minister praised the forward-thinking leadership of Indian scientist Vikram Sarabhai and his impact on space and technology. He pointed out that privatization does not imply diminishing the significance of organizations such as ISRO.
Shekhawat stated that private involvement in the space sector should not diminish the role of established institutions and mechanisms, but rather enhance the capabilities, opportunities, and power of an organization like ISRO.
Shekhawat also emphasized upcoming challenges in the space industry, such as space debris, cybersecurity, data protection, and the ethical application of artificial intelligence. He stated that future global competition and geopolitical conflicts will hinge exclusively on undermining technological prowess, emphasizing that considering all these challenges, India must proceed with resolve.

The event was also attended by ISRO Chairman V Narayanan, Gujarat Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia, and IN-SPACe Chairman Dr Pawan Kumar Goenka. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for designating that day as 'National Space Day' to honor this remarkable accomplishment.
Narayanan recognized and valued the contributions that led to multiple accomplishments of ISRO.

After 2020 reforms in the space sector, the country has seen a notable rise in startups, with approximately 440 currently active in the space industry, he noted. He mentioned several objectives, such as Gaganyaan, which is nearing completion; Chandrayaan-4 and Chandrayaan-5; a plan to deploy more than 300 satellites in 6-7 years with support from startups and the government; missions to Mars and Venus; and the creation of an Indian Space Station by 2035.
