Tesla to Launch Lower-Cost Model Y

Tesla is anticipated to reveal a cheaper variant of its top-selling Model Y SUV, as the electric car manufacturer aims to counter declining sales and diminishing market share in the face of increasing global competition.

For years, CEO Elon Musk has pledged to create mass-market vehicles, but last year he scrapped plans for a brand-new $25,000 electric vehicle, as reported first by Reuters.

The vehicle anticipated this week is a "budget-friendly" model built on existing manufacturing and design frameworks.

Tesla shared two videos on X over the weekend, sparking enthusiasm among its fans. One clip features headlights glowing in the dark, while another displays what seems to be a wheel rotating for a few seconds, followed by "10/7", representing the U.S. date format for October 7.

Unlike past major Tesla launches, neither Tesla nor influencers have suggested that an in-person event is being planned. Nonetheless, analysts, investors, and enthusiasts anticipate the company will reveal some form of news.

Key inquiries involve the vehicle's cost, range of travel, and initiatives to reduce expenses. Toward the end of last year, Musk stated that the car would cost less than the "important limit" of $30,000 with U.S. EV tax incentives.

In the United States, prices significantly increased by $7,500 at the close of last month when the credit program concluded. That boosted quarterly sales to an all-time high, but it’s anticipated that they will decelerate for the remainder of the year, unless the budget-friendly vehicle comes to the rescue.

"The urge to purchase the vehicle is extremely strong." Musk stated in July during Tesla's Q2 earnings call, "It's simply that people lack sufficient funds in their bank accounts to purchase it." "The less expensive we can make the car, the more advantageous it is."

Musk originally assured that manufacturing of the vehicle would begin by the close of June. However, Tesla stated in July that it had only produced what it referred to as "first builds" of the vehicle, mentioning that it would be accessible to customers during the year's final three months.

Tesla has been contending with decreasing sales of its older models as competition has surged, particularly in China and Europe, where Musk's far-right political opinions have also weakened brand loyalty.

Earlier this year, Tesla introduced an updated version of the Model Y featuring enhancements such as new light bars and a touchscreen at the rear.

Musk has been steering the company towards artificial intelligence, concentrating on robotaxis and human-like robots. Tesla has announced plans to introduce more budget-friendly cars in its range, though specifics are yet to be revealed.

According to reports, the electric vehicle manufacturer intends to launch a simplified version of its Model 3 sedan.

Inexpensive vehicles will be crucial for Tesla to achieve the goal of delivering 20 million cars in the next ten years - one of the various operational and valuation targets established by the board for Musk’s suggested $1 trillion compensation plan.
