Volkswagen Teams With Horizon Robotics for China AI Driving Push
Volkswagen is enhancing its collaboration with the Chinese tech firm Horizon Robotics as the German car manufacturer aims to speed up the advancement of Autonomous Driving technologies and bolster its presence in China's Smart Vehicle Market, according to reports.
Through the broadened partnership, Volkswagen's automated driving division CARIZON in China will utilize Horizon Robotics' AI foundational model, assisting the company in accelerating the creation of advanced driver-assistance and autonomous driving technologies.
The report indicates that Volkswagen announced it aims to start providing vehicles with Level 3 Driver-Assistance Technology in China starting in the latter half of 2027. The firm plans to introduce Level 2++ assisted driving features throughout its China range this year, with vehicles anticipated to arrive for customers in the third quarter.
The broader collaboration will aid in advancing Level 4 Autonomous Driving technologies, such as robotaxi services, as Volkswagen seeks to keep pace with Chinese competitors and worldwide EV frontrunners.
Level 3 systems enable vehicles to operate autonomously in specific situations, but drivers must be ready to regain control when needed. Level 4 technology advances further, enabling vehicles to manage nearly all driving scenarios autonomously without human intervention.

The shift occurs as smart driving capabilities emerge as a critical competition area in China's auto sector. Chinese government data indicates that over 30% of newly sold vehicles in the country in the first half of 2026 featured advanced navigation-guided driving assistance systems.

Volkswagen and various international car manufacturers have progressively moved technology advancement to China to take advantage of the nation's expanding capabilities in electric vehicles, software, and artificial intelligence. Domestic brands like BYD and international companies such as Tesla already provide sophisticated driver assistance technologies throughout a large portion of their vehicle ranges.
According to Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume, China has emerged as a crucial center for innovation and technology for Volkswagen Group, especially in software, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving. He stated that the partnership would enhance the firm's competitiveness in China and create prospects in specific international markets.
The self-driving technologies created through the collaboration are anticipated to be incorporated into Volkswagen's vehicle framework tailored for China and may ultimately aid exports from China to regions such as Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
