DRDO Inks First High-Value Deep Tech Deal for Quantum Technology

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has entered into the “first high-value deep tech project agreement” with a start-up, partnering for the domestic creation of a dilution refrigerator -- advanced cryogenic systems that can reach very low temperatures in the millikelvin range -- for quantum uses, according to the defense ministry.
The agreement was signed here by the director of the Technology Development Fund (TDF) and Zero mK India Private Limited based in Alwar, Rajasthan.

The ministry stated that this is the initial significant agreement within the Rs 500-crore fund that Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had previously sanctioned for advanced technology and innovative projects.
Under the TDF initiative, the DRDO has entered into its inaugural high-value deep-tech project agreement with the industry start-up Zero mK India Private Limited for a “joint effort for the local development of a 20 mK dilution refrigerator for quantum applications,” according to DRDO.
Dilution refrigerators are specialized cryogenic systems designed to reach very low temperatures in the millikelvin range. An ultra-cold environment is crucial for the functionality and evaluation of various quantum-computing systems and related quantum technologies.
The homegrown development of a 20 mK-class dilution refrigerator is in line with the National Quantum Mission and enhances India’s expertise in quantum technology, sophisticated cryogenics, and strategic technologies, aiding in the establishment of a self-sufficient, quantum-ready environment.
“This will contribute towards reducing dependence on imported cryogenic infrastructure and strengthening the domestic quantum technology ecosystem,” it says.
Singh has praised the DRDO, the industry, and every participant linked to this significant project.
The defense minister has conveyed optimism that the collaboration will establish a significant precedent for future DRDO-industry partnerships in the realm of emerging technologies.

Defense Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, as well as DRDO Chairman, Rajesh Kumar Singh, congratulated the teams involved in the initiative and wished them success in reaching the project goals. The project is under observation, guidance, and assistance from the director of the Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) along with his team.
For India, building this capability locally has ramifications that extend beyond quantum computing. Advanced cryogenic systems are specialized technologies that encompass precise engineering, refrigeration, electronics, and control mechanisms. Reliance on foreign equipment may lead to weaknesses in the advancement and evaluation of critical strategic technologies.
The DRDO initiative is thus focused on creating more than just a specialized cooling system. It aims to create a local expertise in a supportive technology that may grow more significant as India’s quantum environment develops.

The initiative is in accordance with the National Quantum Mission and aims to enhance India’s proficiency in quantum technology, advanced cryogenics, and additional strategic technology fields. Indigenous manufacturing might lessen reliance on imported cryogenic infrastructure, while providing Indian researchers, start-ups, and technology innovators better access to essential equipment.
The agreement also indicates an expanding role for the TDF in assisting deep-tech start-ups in sectors that could extend beyond conventional defense systems.
