Government Appoints Rakesh Aggarwal as NIA Chief

Senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal was designated as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), while former Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor was appointed as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), taking over from Praveen Kumar, who will assume leadership of the Border Security Force (BSF).
Aggarwal, a member of the Indian Police Service (IPS) since 1994 from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been temporarily appointed to the role of Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following the return of his predecessor, Sadanand Vasant Date, to his original cadre in Maharashtra.

The Selection Committee of the Cabinet has officially sanctioned Aggarwal's appointment with a term lasting until August 31, 2028, which coincides with his planned retirement date, as per an announcement from the Department of Personnel & Training.
Kapoor, a member of the 1990 class of the Indian Police Service from the state of Haryana, was removed from his position as the head of the Haryana Police department last month, following his suspension two months earlier in relation to the suicide of a senior IPS officer. Puran Kumar was subsequently appointed to the position of Chairman at the Haryana Police Housing Corporation.

During the tenure of chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Kapoor was named as the Director General of Police (Haryana) in August 2023, surpassing two senior IPS officers, Mohd Akhil and R C Mishra, who belonged to the 1989 batch.
The distinguished IPS official Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor was appointed as the director general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). He will take over from the current leader, Praveen Kumar, who has been assigned as the new head of the Border Security Force (BSF).
The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet approved Kapoor's designation as the head of the ITBP until October 31, 2026, which coincides with his retirement date.

Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the West Bengal cadre, has been designated as the upcoming head of the BSF until his retirement on September 30, 2030, as stated in the directive.
