India Names Vishwesh Negi as India's Ambassador to Iran
India has designated senior diplomat Vishwesh Negi as its forthcoming Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Monday.
Negi, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2002 batch, is presently a Joint Secretary in the MEA and is anticipated to assume his new post in Tehran soon.
His appointment arrives at a critical moment as tensions persist in West Asia after recent military actions and revitalized diplomatic initiatives involving the United States and Iran.
India has been vigilantly observing the situation, especially because of worries regarding the safety of commercial shipping and Indian sailors in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
The MEA announced that Negi will soon take over in Tehran, where he will manage India's diplomatic relations with Iran amid ongoing regional security concerns.
India and Iran have enduring connections in sectors like energy, commerce, connectivity, and regional collaboration. The appointment also arrives as New Delhi keeps emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to avert further escalation in the area.
The safety of maritime routes in the Gulf is a significant worry for India, due to its reliance on energy imports and shipping traffic traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
